NASA Commanders Twitter About Possible Space Meeting

Two NASA astronaut commanders have perspectives like no others on Twitter — the views of twin brothers preparing on opposite sides of the world to command both the space shuttle and the International Space Station.

The tweeting twins are astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly. Mark is the commander of space shuttle mission STS-134, set to launch in late 2010. Scott is the commander of station Expedition 26, also set to fly in late 2010. If schedules hold, the two may meet in space during their respective commands.

Social network for music enthusiasts

Website Development Company Hudson Horizons recently completed a new project for a client, marked by the launch of his new site, BuildAJam.com, a social network geared towards music enthusiasts.

Hudson Horizons has been designing, developing and optimizing traditional websites for clients since 2003; but as social networking websites continue to grown in popularity, Hudson Horizons founder, President and CEO Daryl H. Bryant is proud to respond to new clients’ interest in the thriving industry.

“When a client’s fascination with social networking websites goes beyond merely participating on such services,” he said, “our team is here to deliver. BuildAJam.com is one of our development team’s proudest accomplishments.”

Build A Jam represents a unique social network where people of all ages can come together and share their love of music in a variety of ways. Much like many social networking websites, members can register for free accounts, customize their profiles, and mingle in like-minded communities.

Hudson Horizons VP of Technology, Matt Mayernik, explained that each member of Build A Jam can create their own stage name, upload a user picture, add a personal bio, add frequent status updates, create a list of the instruments they play, and “become a fan” of their favorite bands– similar to a social bookmarking feature.

“With Build A Jam, we really took the concept of social networking to the next level,” continued Mayernik. “Members can create separate profiles for bands they’re currently in, or even create a profile for an evolving music project.”

In addition to the social network features standard with every Build A Jam member account, band profiles can be further customized by defining favorite genres and sharing listings for open positions. Band members can also invite fellow Build A Jam musicians to join, share comments on friends’ band profiles, and add photos from concerts, rehearsals, or other band events.

“What’s more,” emphasized Mayernik, “is that members can upload mp3 files of their own songs, so that everyone in the Build A Jam network – whether they’re musicians looking to hook up or just music-lovers wanting to listen in—can hear the actual songs recorded by that band.”

Embracing the power and influence of social media marketing, the developers at Hudson Horizons embedded social media buttons on each band profile that allow members to connect with them on Twitter as well as Facebook.

Anti-To-All-Social-Networks Wooxie Surfaces to GO Micro or GO Macro: A MicMacro?

A new social network Wooxie has surfaced, with a Microblogging and Macroblogging feature. The new social network allows users to post short messages (up to 155 characters) and offers a GO Macro feature for 240-1440 character messages. Interesting! So is the MicMacro-blogging idea genius? Is this an innovative way to give options to users on the go and uncramp the long-winded chatter boxes? Or is this just another social network attempting to compete with Twitter and Facebook? You decide.

Time will tell if users start to flock to a network with multiple messaging options. Apparently there are many other features offered too – Featured fans, talk back under posts with emoticons, personal and business photo galleries, links in business galleries, etc. Wooxie’s theme is after the nickname of a real living family dog. And is NOT to be confused with the Anti-Twitter clone Woofer. Wooxie is a Free Social Network that requires account verification and username/password prior to logging in to use their service.

Whether you are a Micro or a Macro, Wooxie is a network worth checking out. Post short messages or extended thoughts, choose categories upon sign-up and much more.

SOCIAL NETWORK CITYSOCIALISING LAUNCH SEARCH

CitySocialising, the UK’s leading socialising and networking site and service for city professionals today launched its search to find the UK’s most sociable people.

In their hunt for the CitySocialising Super Socialiser 2009, the networking site is asking its members across 19 cities in the UK and Scotland to organise and host great social days and nights out in their city and invite as many people as they can to join them.

Earlier this year, CitySocialising surveyed over 3500 professionals across the UK on their opinions of meeting new people and found that it took 64% of adults three months or more to make a single real world friend, even though online they may gather several hundred in the same period.

The network found that thirty six percent of those surveyed had moved cities in the last two years and of those, 86% had found meeting new people and making new friends “slow and difficult”. When asked why, 33% expressed difficulty knowing where to go to meet new friends, whilst 27% said the biggest barrier was finding people who shared the same interests. Twelve per cent of those surveyed said that people were often “too cliquey” and therefore not open to opening up to new friendships.

“That’s why we at CitySocialising decided to launch this competition, to encourage people to be proactive about meeting new friends, organising the kind of things that they themselves like doing and then reaching out of their comfort zones to invite new people to join them” says Sanchita Saha, 33 year old CEO and Founder of CitySocialising. “It’s an ideal way to meet new people who like doing same things as you and gives great results when it comes to forging new, real world friendships. As our study revealed, there can be barriers to meeting new friends such as knowing where to go and how to meet people – with our Super Socialiser competition we’re challenging people to get out there and take control of their social lives.”

The competition runs through September and October and two prize draws to win the latest mini Sony VAIO (worth £450), £150 M&S, Amazon and Starbucks vouchers as well as free premium membership to CitySocialising will be held on Monday 9th November. Plus, all entries to the draw receive a month’s free premium membership to CitySocialising.

To enter the draws, entrants need to create a social event or activity on the CitySocialising site, and get 8, 10 or 20 or more people to attend. For more information, visit: http://www.citysocialising.com/competition/

FlyFisherPro.com – launches with social networking tools

The newest entry into the online fly fishing world launches with social networking tools and an eye to helping the fly fishing industry as well as anglers.
FlyFisherPro.com is the newest fly fishing website now appearing on the small screen. With literally hundreds of other fishing websites out there, what makes FlyFisherPro special? That question was answered by the company’s founder and CEO, Michael Lenzini.
“We have a dual purpose: to serve the angler community with lots of information, social networking tools, and current fishing reports bundled with lots of location-specific information. But we also hope to help the businesses in the fly fishing industry – the vast majority of whom are small, mom and pop businesses – with their marketing. No other site has this focus.”
FlyFisherPro’s social networking tools include the ability to share information about one’s favorite fly patterns and upload pictures and details, including information and pictures about the insects fish feed on. There are forums where like-minded anglers can discuss and share information on topics of mutual interest – from tying dry flies to fishing techniques, to equipment, to conservation and environmental issues. The blog covers just about any topic related to fly fishing, and will present guest bloggers well-known to the fly fishing community. A directory allows the viewer to search for fishing and outdoors-related businesses by location or type of business. Businesses are given the opportunity to put up a simple listing in the directory for free. Finally, there’s the Buy/Sell/Trade tent where members can post fishing equipment for sale, items sought, and even post to share a ride to go fishing.
Much of the site’s information, such as the monthly column, the Healthy Angler™, written by Dr. Jim Hoven, is open and available to the public. The site does have a membership category, and for less than $50 per year, members get access to a proprietary trip planner, with all sorts of real-time data for specific river sections and lakes, the B/S/T tent, discounts on shop merchandise, coupons and special offers from advertisers, and discounts or free access to online and live seminars and clinics.
“We are adding member benefits all the time,” said Mr. Lenzini, “ and bringing in more content, more interactive tools and multimedia and more connections to the fly fishing community. Our goal is to be one of the few go-to sites that anglers bookmark in their browser and visits regularly.”
You can visit the site at www.flyfisherpro.com.

New Social Networking Site Breaks Language Barrier

As social networking sites such as Facbeook and MySpace continue to grow in popularity, some minorities may feel left out by English sites. But ApnaCafe, a new networking site launched in April 2009, offers the worldwide Desi community the ability to connect in their own language.

ApnaCafe allows users to set up profiles and communicate with one another using regional languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu and Arabic.

The main focus of the site is to empower the online Desi community and allow members to share information in a comfortable environment, according to CEO Yasin Rahim.

“ApnaCafe was primarily started to consolidate all Desi-specific core applications and as a platform to bring friends from different networking sites together in one place, giving users many powerful features with a Desi identity,” says Rahim.

As with other networking sites, ApnaCafe’s clean design and user-friendly layout enables users to share information online the same way they do in the real world. They can connect with friends, find people with shared interests, join groups, send messages, share videos, compose blogs, write movie reviews and post photos.

In addition to the innumerable data-sharing features, ApnaCafe employs a points system that rewards users for surfing the site. As users accumulate points, they can redeem them for electronics, DVDs, music and books using the site’s shopping system.

The site also makes it simple to incorporate users’ other social networking accounts into their ApnaCafe profile. Anyone can import contact lists, address books and display their Twitter feeds and write scraps similar to Orkut on their profiles, all in their own languages. Users can also register for ApnaCafe using Facebook, which pulls all the information from their Facebook profile to establish an ApnaCafe profile quickly and easily.
