Midjourney Selects Google Cloud to Power AI Creative Platform

Google Cloud announced a new partnership with Midjourney, an independent research lab that provides a platform for AI-powered creative tools for creating visual imagery with natural language interfaces. Midjourney selected Google Cloud as its infrastructure provider of choice to benefit from the company’s deep expertise in training large-scale AI models, scalability, and sustainability.

As part of the partnership, Midjourney has employed Google Cloud’s custom-developed AI accelerators, Tensor Processor Units (TPUs), to train its fourth generation AI model. In combination with Google Cloud’s GPU VMs, which run on NVIDIA GPUs, Midjourney can render the generated images on the platform with breathtaking speed. While TPUs are designed to accelerate computationally-intensive machine learning workloads, pairing them with Google Cloud GPU VMs, which have broad support for AI industry tools, uniquely enables GCP customers like Midjourney to tackle any AI workload with speed and flexibility. Google Cloud’s open approach to AI development and leadership in custom chips allows Midjourney to provide its users with a seamless creative experience based on its scalable, secure, and stable infrastructure.

Google Cloud’s commitment to sustainability was another critical factor in Midjourney’s decision to collaborate with the company. Advanced AI/ML workloads require significant compute power, and Midjourney needed a cloud partner that could help curb its energy consumption and carbon emissions. The latest generation of TPUs operate at 90% carbon-free energy in one of the most efficient data centers in the world1.

“As AI opens the door for innovation across industries, companies like Midjourney are choosing Google Cloud to take advantage of our open, flexible, and performant infrastructure, which runs with incredible scale and efficiency,” said Amin Vahdat, VP/GM Systems and Services Infrastructure, Google Cloud. “We are excited to see the Midjourney community create impressive imagery thanks to our industry-leading offerings.”

Canon announce new RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM super telephoto zoom lens

Canon Europe have announced the launch of the RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM, marking a new generation of super telephoto zoom lenses. By reimagining the EF 300mm f/2.8 as a zoom lens while satisfying the demand for prime level quality, Canon demonstrates its commitment to expanding the EOS R System and RF lens range for photographers and videographers alike. The RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM offers new levels of flexibility and performance in a compact and lightweight design. Due to its zoom range, with a minimum focusing distance of 1.8m with a 0.16x maximum magnification, constant aperture, robust construction and stunning image quality, the lens primarily appeals to professionals and enthusiasts who specialise in sports photography – from indoor sports to motorsports.

The RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM has a super-compact design and is the lightest zoom lens in its class1 at 2.59kg – only 190g heavier than the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM fixed lens – offering all the flexibility of a zoom matched with the performance of a prime lens. The compact size and performance have been made possible thanks to the RF mount at the heart of the EOS R System. This ground-breaking mount enables the lens to maintain a constant f/2.8 fixed aperture throughout the zoom range whilst offering blazingly fast and accurate autofocus and tracking.

Fully compatible with the range of Canon RF extenders, the RF 1.4x extender can be used throughout the zoom range to produce a 140-420mm F4 lens, while the RF 2x extender can be used to produce a 200-600mm F5.6 lens. This positions the RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM perfectly for sports, news and wildlife photographers who want to avoid switching between lenses during a shoot. Additionally, it is the first professional super telephoto RF lens to feature the control ring, plus a new customisable L.FN button within reach, adding an element of enhanced customisation and greater manual control that these photographers desire.

RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM features:
• 100-300mm focal range
• f/2.8 constant zoom
• Lightest in its class at 2.59kg1
• 5.5 stops of Optical Image Stabilizer, with 6-stops when combined with a camera which features an in-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS)
• Silent, fast autofocus, using Dual Nano USM motor

Canon Europe announce EOS R100 and RF 28mm F2.8 STM

Canon Europe have announced the launch of the EOS R100, perfect for capturing special occasions and lasting memories. With a 24.1 megapixel, APS-C sensor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF packed into its compact and lightweight body, the EOS R100 offers stunning yet effortless image quality, perfect for shooting on the go. Accompanying the launch of the camera is the RF 28mm F2.8 STM, Canon’s smallest and lightest lens in the RF range, as well as the OC-E4A, a new off-camera shoe cord for Canon’s multi-function shoe.

The EOS R100 features a 24.1 megapixel APS-C sensor which is several times larger than that found in a top of the range smartphone, providing a noticeable step up in image and video quality. This not only delivers impeccable colour and incredible detail, but also gives users the ability to shoot in low light conditions and achieve beautiful, authentic bokeh where the background is smoothly softened, allowing the subject to stand out.

With the intelligent autofocus of the EOS R range, the EOS R100 has Dual Pixel CMOS AF with fast and accurate subject detection, tracking people’s eyes when using the viewfinder or the LCD screen, keeping up with the action and focusing on what really matters.

The EOS R100 has improved video performance compared to a smartphone or DSLR, offering 4K 25p video1, bringing the benefits of the EOS R System to this easy-to-use, entry-level camera. It is also capable of Full HD video recording at 60 fps and 120 fps at 720p resolution, ideal for smooth slow-motion videos, which is particularly useful when getting creative with holiday content. The reliable Dual Pixel CMOS AF also enables face detection and eye tracking when recording in Full HD.

he RF 28mm F2.8 STM is an extremely compact and lightweight full frame RF prime pancake lens. It has been carefully designed to be the perfect combination for cameras such as the recently launched EOS R8. It can easily fit into any kit bag or be used instead of a body cap, ideal for travel and street photographers on the move.

Its versatile 28mm focal length and fast F2.8 maximum aperture make it suitable for a variety of shooting scenarios. The fast aperture enables low light shooting and achieves a shallow depth of field for blurred backgrounds to make the subject stand out. The RF 28mm F2.8 STM includes a combined control and focus ring, enabling users to easily adjust settings and quickly switch to manual focus if required. What’s more, the STM motor also allows quiet autofocus and smooth transitions between subjects.

Canon’s combination of an EOS R body and RF lens enables a variety of correction options to be implemented to assist entry-level photographers and videographers, offering better image quality, and allowing for a smaller lens design. The effective placement of three high-precision plastic moulded aspheric elements achieves excellent rendering capability and compactness while also keeping the number of elements to a minimum.

CloudDefense.AI Discovers Unsecured Database, Exposing Sensitive Personal Data of Millions

An unsecured database containing personal information of millions of users of a higher education social platform was recently discovered by a security researcher. The social platform, formerly known as CampusKudos and now called PeopleGrove, left an internal database exposed to the internet without a password, allowing anyone with knowledge of its IP address to access the data using a web browser.

The exposed database contained gigabytes of personal information, including email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, details of university achievements and scores, and resumes containing detailed work histories and employment details. Shockingly, none of the exposed data was encrypted, making it easy for anyone to access and steal sensitive personal information.

CloudDefense security researcher, Anurag Sen, discovered the database on Thursday and immediately contacted TechCrunch, who then notified PeopleGrove. The server hosting the database became inaccessible soon after.

Canon Announces imagePROGRAF TC-20M, A1+ Printer With A4 Scanner

Canon has launched the imagePROGRAF TC-20M, a full-colour (CMYK), large format, desktop printer which is equipped with an A4 flatbed scanner. The user-friendly design of the printer enables even first-time users to easily create large format copies for a wide variety of applications without a computer – such as promotional posters for retail stores and restaurants, educational materials for schools and even customised wrapping paper, up to A1+ in size. The device is also suitable for creating technical construction, design and survey drawings at home or small offices – making it relevant for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) markets.

In addition to usual network printing capabilities, users can preview JPEG and PDF documents, scan, copy and enlarge A4-sized originals, plus other paper sizes. Jobs can also be printed directly through the printer control panel, via a USB flash drive.

Space-saving design and support for A1+ to A4 paper sizes

The space-saving design of the imagePROGRAF TC-20M allows users to easily perform all print-related operations from the front of the unit, including the paper setting (roll or sheet) and loading, ink refilling and collecting prints. Large-capacity, 70 ml ink tanks result in less frequent refilling of the four colour (CMYK) pigment inks, which produce high-quality, colourful designs. The different shape and colour of the inlets on each tank prevent refilling with the wrong colour.

The printer supports rolls of paper up to A1+ wide and is equipped with a standard auto sheet-feeder compatible with A3 and A4 paper. Rolls and sheets of paper can be loaded at the same time, allowing users to copy and print various sizes on one machine by selecting the chosen paper source on the operator panel. Users are also able to repeatedly copy a single document on a roll of paper of up to A1+in size1.

With its compact body, measuring 968 mm wide by 525 mm deep by 245 mm high, and space-saving design, the imagePROGRAF TC-20M can be placed on a shelf or desk and the optional basket “BU-06” can be used to catch printed materials, making it a great choice for large-format printing even in tight spaces.

Canon announce RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM lens

Canon Europe have announced the launch of the RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM, a telephoto prime lens ideal for shooting portraits in low-light.

The successor of the popular Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM, the RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM achieves striking portraits thanks to the combination of a fast f/1.8, 9-blade aperture and 135mm focal length that create a beautiful bokeh effect, while compressing subject features for more flattering shots. This also creates a more comfortable and relaxed shooting environment thanks to the additional distance between subject and photographer, for natural looking photos whether capturing tight headshots or full body shots. The RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM is also perfect for close shooting, with a focusing distance of 0.7m that gives a 0.26x magnification. RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM also employs an Optical Image Stabiliser for up to 5.5 stops of stabilization, which increases to 8 stops with co-ordinated stabilization1, which is ideal when shooting in low light or hand-held.

As with Canon’s entire RF lens range, the RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM delivers exceptional image quality across the entire frame. The advanced optical design features three UD elements to ensure high resolution, accurate colour reproduction and reduce chromatic aberrations. With ASC and Super Spectra Coating, the RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM also benefits from minimal ghosting or flare, while the fluorine coating helps to keep the lens free from dirt for sharp images every time.

The RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM offers effortless operation and handling, to support photographers in high-pressure shooting scenarios such as weddings or live sporting events. A Nano USM motor enables fast and quiet AF operation, which, coupled with Canon’s Eye AF feature2 , ensures the RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM accurately focuses on the subject’s eye so that the photographer can concentrate on the composition – useful when shooting with a shallow depth-of-field. The RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM is Canon’s first ever lens, other than super-telephoto lenses, to feature two Lens Function buttons, which can be used for AF-stop function or other features. A Control Ring can also be customised to change various settings from the lens such as shutter speed, aperture or ISO. Dust and water-resistant seals around the lens mount ensure reliability in any shooting conditions.

RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM key features:

• Fast f/1.8, 9-blade circular aperture
• 135mm focal length
• 5.5 stops of stabilization (8 stops with IBIS)
• Advanced optical design featuring three UD elements, ASC and Super Spectra Coating
• Nano USM motor for fast and quiet AF
