The second version of Mapbox offline map tile packs now uses up to 40% less space. Improved tile pack efficiency means that offline maps require less space on embedded hardware and mobile devices, without sacrificing coverage or detail. Mapbox customers can reallocate that saved space toward non-map related functions, or allow users to increase the coverage area or zoom level of maps when offline.
Mapbox offline tile packs v2 currently include offline tilesets for the Mapbox Streets-v8 and Auto-v1 tilesets, with support for additional tilesets coming in the future. Applications need to use the Mapbox Mobile Maps SDKs v11.16 or higher in order to access tile packs v2. Before going live with the v2 tile packs in an application, we recommend contacting Mapbox to discuss some best practices and considerations. Canon is releasing the imagePROGRAF PRO-310, a new inkjet printer for enthusiast photographers with 10-colour pigment ink for A3+ printing, which combines high photographic image quality, light-fastness and abrasion resistance.
The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310, a new product in the large-format inkjet printer series, is a printer that meets the needs of photographers who want to print their photos beautifully and display them as works of art for a long time. By adopting the newly developed pigment ink LUCIA PRO II1, the PRO series achieves outstanding photographic image quality, such as rich colours and deep blacks, while significantly improving the light resistance and abrasion resistance of printed materials, enabling the creation of high-quality works with rich expression and long-term storage.
The new LUCIA PRO II inks, which are common to the higher-end models, use a pigment that is resistant to UV rays and does not deteriorate easily. As a result, the light resistance of printed materials reaches up to 200 years2, enabling long-term, archival storage. In addition, when printing on glossy paper, the wax added to the ink smooths the surface, making the printed materials highly resistant to abrasion. It also prevents scratches during post-printing operations such as framing and transportation, improving the ease of handling printed materials.
When printing on glossy paper, the transparent Chroma Optimiser ink suppresses reflected light and evens out the gloss, allowing true reproduction of the original colours of photographs regardless of lighting, viewing angle or other environmental conditions. When printing on fine art paper, matte black ink with high black density enables deep, tight blacks. It enhances light and scratch resistance, while creating expressive works that reproduce rich colours and subject textures.
Styrofoam used in product packing for the previous model3 has been replaced with recyclable corrugated cardboard and pulp molds, reducing the amount of single use plastic.
OpenAI is testing a new search engine that uses generative artificial intelligence to produce results, raising the prospect of a significant challenge to Google’s dominance of the online search market, writes Nick Robins-Early on The Guardian.
“SearchGPT will launch with a small group of users and publishers before a potential wider rollout, the company announced on Thursday. OpenAI ultimately intends to incorporate the search features into ChatGPT, rather offer a standalone product.
OpenAI said SearchGPT is a temporary prototype that will combine the company’s AI models, such as ChatGPT, with the ability to search the internet. It will respond conversationally to searches, while providing up-to-date information with “clear links to relevant sources”.
The search feature positions the company as a direct competitor to major search engines, most notably Google but also Bing, a product of OpenAI’s biggest investor Microsoft.”
Canon announced that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM equipped with an RF mount and is aiming for a 2024 release.
The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera geared toward professionals that brings together Canon’s cutting-edge technology and combines top-class performance with the strong durability and high reliability sought in a flagship model. This camera will dramatically improve1 the performance of both still images and video and meet the high requirements of professionals on the frontlines of a wide range of fields including sports, news reporting, and video production.
This camera employs the newly developed image processor DIGIC Accelerator in addition to the pre-existing processor DIGIC X. The new image processing system, composed of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables large volume of data to be processed at high speeds and delivers never-before-seen advancements in Auto Focus (AF) and other functions.
By combining the new image processing system and deep learning technology to an advanced degree, Canon has achieved high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition. For example, subject tracking accuracy has been improved so that in team sporting events where multiple subjects intersect, the target subject can continually be tracked even if another player passes directly in front of them. In addition, the AF “Action Priority” function recognizes subject movement by rapidly analyzing the subject’s status. In moments during a sports game when it is difficult to predict what will happen next, this function automatically determines the player performing a certain action, such as shooting a ball, as the main subject and instantly shifts the AF frame, thereby helping to capture decisive moments of gameplay.
The combination of the new image processing system and deep learning technology will help to improve image quality. Canon implements the image noise reduction function, which has been previously developed and improved as part of the software for PCs, as a camera function to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.
Canon is working on field tests for this camera, and will support capturing definitive and impactful moments at international sporting events to be held in the future.
Going forward, Canon will continue to expand the EOS R SYSTEM lineup of fascinating cameras and RF lenses, thereby continuing to meet the demands of a wide range of users and contribute to the development of photography and video culture.

In addition to these functions, the new lenses feature distortion aberration correction. These features support efficient video production not only during on-location recording but also post-shoot editing.
The new lenses achieve exceptional optical performance, excellent colour reproduction and are suitable for use with 4K and 8K cameras – optimally positioning large-diameter aspherical lens elements and lens elements with anomalous dispersion glass. Their compatibility with the full-frame large-format sensor, bright T-stop values2, and the use of 11 aperture blades allow for a shallow depth of field for subjects, natural round blurring, and soft image expressions. In addition, since the colour balance is unified throughout the series, adjusting colour tones when changing lenses while shooting the same scene can be done with greater ease.
With an appropriate sense of torque of the operation ring, the new lenses allow for precise and smooth adjustments that are required for cinema shooting. In addition, due to the unified design across the series, including the gear position of the operation ring, the diameter of the lens and the rotation angle (operation angle), the lens can be exchanged smoothly without the need to adjust the mounting position of the matte box or external follow focus accessories for each model. A new knurled surface near the mount provides a comfortable fit in the user’s hand, allowing the lens to be held securely without gripping the operation ring when attaching and detaching different lenses.
Key features of the RF mount Cinema Prime lenses:
