Google Nexus 7 Tablet Announced

Google announced its first entry into the tablet market with the launch of the Google Nexus 7.

Commenting on the launch, Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, says, “Consumer demand for tablets has exploded in just over two years since the launch of the first generation iPad. The wide range of devices now available means that consumer choice and buying power is stronger than ever. Google clearly believes that there is further scope to grow the market and the competitively priced Google Nexus will serve to make tablet devices more accessible to customers.

“The meteoric rise in the popularity of tablets can be attributed to changes in the way we are using the internet, managing relationships and consuming media. Our lives are more connected and ‘always on’ than ever before. It’s all about convenience; people don’t want to have to go to a desk and sit at a computer to surf the internet, do some online shopping, chat with friends or update a Facebook status – tablet devices lend themselves perfectly to all these activities, all from the comfort of the sofa. Whilst laptops have catered to this need in the past they are slightly cumbersome and awkward; tablets offer the ideal solution and represent the direction home computing is likely to take in the future as demand for clunky home desktop PCs decreases.”

Google Nexus features a 7 inch screen, quadcore processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB memory. It will be the first (and only for the next four months) tablet to run the new Jelly Bean operating system.

The Tablet, made by Asus, will be available from Carphone Warehouse priced at £199.99 standalone or for free on a tethered contact.

Virgin Media revamps UK mobile tariffs

Virgin Media has unveiled a new range of mobile tariffs that will set a new standard in unbeatable value which will challenge the rest of the industry to keep up. The star of the show is the hero ‘Premiere’ tariff which combines all-you-can-eat data, unlimited texts, unlimited calls to UK landlines and 2,500 anytime minutes.

To make the most of the largest 3G network in the UK* as well as the hottest smartphones of the summer, Virgin Media has created some of the most competitive tariffs on the market designed to be simple, affordable and flexible, with amped up benefits for loyal Virgin Media** customers

‘Premiere’ starts at an incredible £21 per month for Virgin Media** customers as the company looks to help people to stay connected on the go and whilst making the most of the benefits and savings to be had from taking a mobile with their existing Virgin Media services.

The new tariffs include options for every mobile phone user with prices starting from as little as £18 per month for the new ‘Starter’ tariff, or £13 per month for Virgin Media customers. Not only do Virgin Media customers enjoy reduced costs, saving £5 per month on each tariff, but they also benefit from unlimited calls and texts to other Virgin Mobiles.

Jamie Heywood, director of mobile at Virgin Media said: “When we launched over ten years ago as the worlds first mobile company of its type, we revolutionised the market, and this is another such landmark. As people look for the best value, we’re rewarding loyalty with some amazing tariffs with unlimited offerings that our customers can enjoy without worrying about hidden extras, as well as helping to combat bill shock.”

In a pioneering move, all the new tariffs will include insurance*** for no extra cost for the length of the contract for new and existing Virgin Media customers. It follows a recent study by Virgin Media that found a staggering proportion of Brits (72 per cent) don’t have insurance for their mobiles, despite 70 per cent also admitting to breaking or losing up to seven phones in the last decade – often within the typical 24 month contract period****.

Smartphones can cost as much as £500 and often contain invaluable data such as contacts, texts, emails and photos, so losing one can be a costly and incredibly frustrating experience. The new insurance service (worth £7.99 per month) provides 24 hour guaranteed handset replacement in the UK if it goes missing or is stolen***** and includes Mobile Rescue which will automatically back-up all contacts as well as lock and locate the handset remotely.

Heywood added: “An overwhelming number of consumers don’t believe that mobile insurance is necessary and won’t consider taking insurance through their mobile provider because it’s too expensive. For too long mobile providers have failed to offer insurance that represents value for money. We were astounded to find so many people were prepared to gamble when it came to protecting their handsets, which is why we are now the only provider to offer inclusive insurance as standard for our loyal customers at no extra cost.”

The new range of pay monthly tariffs are subject to 24 month****** contracts and in order to help ensure they have the perfect tariff for their needs, Virgin Media will automatically text customers when they are nearing the limits of their allowances (where applicable) to help ensure manageable costs. Virgin Media’s smartphones also come preloaded with the ‘My Account’ app so customers can keep track of how much they’ve used of their monthly allowance, and if needed, customers have the flexibility to move up or down the tariffs at any point in their contract without penalty.

For customers already with their own data-hungry smartphones Virgin Media is also launching a new range of flexible ‘SIM Only’ tariffs. The ‘SIM Only’ tariffs work on a rolling monthly basis with ‘Premiere’ starting at £20 for cable and national customers who will benefit from unlimited data, text, calls to other Virgin Mobiles and UK landlines.

Virgin Media customers will also be able to take advantage of free WiFi access at up to 120 London Underground stations.

Nike+ Running app announced for Android

NIKE, Inc. announced the launch of the Nike+ Running App for Android, providing more runners with access to the world’s largest running club.

The Nike+ Running App for Android connects seamlessly to nikeplus.com, which has been reengineered to be smarter, more social and more motivational. The app allows runners to track, share and compare their runs from anywhere, anytime. It features a smooth, intuitive user interface – tailored and optimized for Android – that hosts a number of features to enhance the running experience. The in-run navigation is seamless and simple, allowing runners to easily check key run stats, see their in-progress GPS maps, change songs or get audio feedback without missing a stride.

“The expansion of Nike+ onto multiple mobile platforms will allow us to serve more runners than ever before. This opportunity will give even more athletes the chance to experience Nike+, which makes this an incredibly exciting time for the running community,” said Stefan Olander, Vice President, Digital Sport.

The key focus in the app’s design is motivating runners. A “Next Moves” feature on the home screen allows runners to easily flip through suggested challenges: for example, to run their fastest 5k or go their farthest distance. A dynamic goal progress bar helps runners stay motivated and tracking on goals they’ve set up through their nikeplus.com profile.

The app makes sharing to Facebook or Twitter fun with run summary features. Runners can choose from a wide variety of terrains and emotions, as well as tag which shoe they ran in to track shoe total mileage. And for runners recording climate conditions, the app automatically knows the weather based on GPS location.

The Nike+ Running App for Android is available for free on Google Play.

Free Website Privacy Testing Service Launched

PrivacyTest.com is a website tracking and privacy testing service designed to be used by the average non-technical internet user concerned with his or her privacy or online tracking. PrivacyTest.com allows internet users to anonymously test websites for web beacons, and other tracking mechanisms simply and securely.

Creator Rand Wilson wanted to build a simple, anonymous, free way for unsophisticated internet users to anonymously test a website without having to learn how to read web-server headers, HTML code or install special software or web-browser plugins. “We had two design goals for PrivacyTest.com. It had to be simple and it had to be free,” stated Wilson. “I thought, if my wife or parents could use the website and understand it, then it’s a success.”

PrivacyTest.com is now open for public beta testing and feedback and has already performed over 1,000 website privacy tests. Additional features and user interface updates are planned for rollout over the next 90 days.

Three Mobile UK announces unlimited European data roaming

Three pay monthly phone customers will be able to enjoy the benefits of the internet on their smartphones whilst holidaying in the EU without the fear of running up a massive bill.

For just a fiver a day, customers can tweet, tag, browse, book, update, upload, search, send, and Google as much as they want without worrying about how much they’re spending.

So, if you’re trying to find that perfect pizzeria, you can just Google it and track it down on a map. If you can’t remember the word for donkey in Spanish, download a translation app. Or, if you really can’t resist finding out what’s going on at work, you can pick up your emails whenever you like and wherever you are. But best of all, you can make everyone back home insanely jealous with loads of gloaty “look where I am right now” type status updates and photos.

Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director at Three said, “We love the mobile internet at Three and we want our customers to enjoy it on holiday as much as they do at home. The Euro Internet Pass gives our customers the freedom to use the internet in the EU without having to think about how many megabytes or gigabytes they are using or where the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot is.

“We’ve been campaigning for lower data roaming rates and welcome the new regulation from Europe. These changes promote competition and allow us to offer our customers a better deal so they no longer have to worry about running up a massive bill when using the internet”.

Convert.Com Announce Alternative Google Website Optimizer

Exciting news for Google Website Optimizer users that are forced to look for alternative A/B testing and multivariate testing – Convert Insights launches its application Convert Experiments with seamless Google Analytics integration. The company is even offering to migrate existing Google Website Optimizer users with A/B or multivariate tests to migrate to Convert Experiments.

“We are promising a seamless integration with Google Analytics in terms of multivariate testing, conversion and revenue tracking as well as real-time statistics to people that are forced to search alternative products to Google Website Optimizer. It was frustrating to see that June 1st 2012 Google announced the discontinuation of Google Website Optimizer (also know as GWO) and the only alternative solution offered was Google Analytics Content Experiments that has half of the features of Google Website Optimizer. With our team of 5 where each of us is a specialist or developer in conversion optimization it was natural we could extend a hand to users now stuck with expensive enterprise solutions,” says the spokesperson of Convert Insights, the company which was launched in 2009 brought their first A/B testing solution to users in 2010 and received funding from Alta Ventures to improve the lives of millions of online marketers and business owners. He further added that the launch of Convert Experiments is a joint effort by Claudiu Rogoveanu, Jeroen van der Tuin, Stefanie Baeker and Dennis van der Heijden.

The company stands apart from its competitors with their seamless Google Analytics integration, live-stats, multivariate testing, targeting dynamic eCommerce pages and its ability to track revenue and conversion with one line of code on a website, the so called tag-less integration that will make the life of agencies and marketer that use Google Analytics easier and are looking for Google Website Optimizer alternatives.

Convert Insights is reporting of a hundred percent growth every year and has received venture capital in 2011 as a back up for their development. – http://www.convert.com/
