Twitter Gets Major Redesign

Twitter is rolling out a major redesign aimed at making it faster, easier to navigate and more attractive to advertisers, writes Emma Woollacott on Tgdaily.

Twitter redesigns to take on Facebook:

“The new look is consistent across Twitter itself, iOS, Android and the TweetDeck desktop app. It now includes a section called ‘Stories’, displaying to the user stories and trends based on earlier activity.

A Connect tab shows users who’s following them or retweeting their tweets, and Discover is basically a rebranding of hashtags, but with more personalization.

The Home tab displays incoming tweets, allowing them to be expanded to view photos or videos. Profile pages now feature a larger header image for the user’s logo, tagline or other visuals.

The new design is available immediately for iOS and Android users, and will roll out to everybody else over the next few weeks.”

TAMRON ANNOUNCES THE 18-200MM F/3.5-6.3 DI III VC LENS FOR SONY NEX

Tamron Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer of optical equipment, announced the introduction of an exciting new lens, the 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC (Model B011). The new high-power all-in-one zoom lens is designed for the Sony NEX (E-mount) series of interchangeable-lens, lightweight and compact digital cameras. Tamron, the zoom lens pioneer, brings 19 years of high-power zoom lens development technologies to this new product. The lens will begin shipping in the U.S. December 15, 2011.

With the 18-200mm Di III VC (Model B011), Tamron has created a high-power all-in-one zoom lens that is compact and lightweight, featuring a 62mm filter and weighing only 16.2 oz., while at the same time delivering superlative image quality. This compact size lets users easily shoot across an extended range – from wide-angle to full telephoto – with just one lens. The focal length coverage is 18-200mm. Converted to the coverage of the 35mm format, this is equivalent to a range of 27mm wide-angle up to 300mm full telephoto. This allows the user to easily take wide-angle shots of expansive landscapes and powerful telephoto images that enlarge the details of distant subjects-all with one lens. In addition, by setting the lens at the telephoto end (200mm) and moving in to the minimum focus distance of 19.6″, flower petals, jewelry and other small objects can be shot as expanded close-ups.

Product Features
Compact and lightweight
The high-power 18-200mm all-in-one lens is a lightweight and compact zoom weighing 16.2 oz. with a 62mm filter, designed for exclusive use on the E-mount lens system on Sony’s NEX series mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras.
Built-in stabilization enables easy handheld shooting from 18mm wide angle to 200mm full telephoto

Equipped with Tamron’s acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation), and thanks to its light weight and compact size, this lens allows easy handheld shooting of sharp images with no camera shake over a wide range of settings, from everyday snapshots to memorable travel scenes.
Stepping motor adopted for the AF drive, a construction that accommodates contrast-detection AF and shooting video

The AF drive has a stepping motor that is optimal for the Contrast-detection AF system employed by NEX series cameras. This also gives the drive a quieter operation, which is ideal for shooting video in which voices are recorded. In addition, ease of operation is enhanced with the Direct Manual Focus (DMF) function, which allows the user to make fine manual adjustments after initially focusing by AF.

Striking appearance worthy of the NEX series design.
The metallic lens barrel exterior is available in two colors: black and silver.

About the stepping motor
The B011’s autofocus mechanism uses a stepping motor that is an ideal match for the Contrast-detection AF system used in Sony’s NEX series cameras. The stepping motor’s actuator allows finely tuned control of angular rotation,
and since it drives the focusing mechanism directly without an intermediate reduction gear, it also provides superbly quiet performance.

About the VC (Vibration Compensation) system
Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots.

About the new VC mechanism (moving coil system)

Tamron’s conventional VC (Vibration Compensation) unit has a moving magnet system with heavy magnets in the vibration-compensating lens. However, the new VC mechanism adopts a lightweight moving coil system that reduces the load on the drive system. This allows the drive to be operated with smaller coils and magnets, reducing the weight and size for the entire VC unit. In addition, improvements to software and other elements of the VC mechanism used in the 18-200mm Di III VC have made the mechanism even quieter.

Memo Touch Keeps Memory Challenged Seniors Informed and Independent

Based on the Archos 101 Android tablet the Memo Touch sells for $299 and requires a six-month ($174) or 12-month ($300) subscription

Memo (www.memotouch.com) is a revolutionary new memory assistant that helps seniors with short-term memory loss maintain their independence and age in their own home. Introduced today, the custom software which operates on an Android tablet allows family members to provide their aging parent or loved one with reminders to manage everyday activities even when they are miles away.

Memo is a breakthrough product designed specifically for persons with memory loss and the people who care for them. Elders need no computer experience to use it. “If they can watch TV, they can use a Memo,” says Memo co-founder Carrie Beia. Family members manage the information displayed on the Memo remotely from a companion caregiver website. They can add and update reminders from home, work, or wherever they have internet access.

Memo meets the needs of the two million Americans age 75+ with short-term memory loss, which can have devastating effects on their ability to manage everyday activities. Missed appointments, forgotten medications, and chronic confusion often create difficulties for the elder as well as for their caregiver. Family members carry the burden of constant repetition, frequent interruptions, and disruption of work and family life coming to the assistance of their parent or loved one. For caregivers, Memo is a timesaver, alleviating the time-consuming calls and visits necessary to help their loved one stay on top of everyday activities. It helps relieve caregiver worry, guilt and stress.

“Memo establishes an entirely new product category of memory assistants designed to reduce the confusion and loss of independence caused by memory impairment,” says Merilee Griffin, Ph.D., president of Memo Touch, LLC. Memo can be easily customized to meet the needs of people with a wide range of abilities. Memo’s display can be as simple as the day, date and time and a single reminder, or it can include optional features such as a calendar, to-do list, the weather, phone numbers, a list of medications, and photo albums. A Help button is available to automatically send a text, email or both to the caregiver if needed.

Because access to the caregiver website can be shared among siblings, aides, assisted living staff, and other helpers, Memo facilitates communication and coordination of care. Everyone with access can see the messages, calendar items, to-do lists, and medications. It eliminates the additional responsibility typically placed on the primary caregiver to keep all interested parties informed.

By inputting information on a companion website, family members can post:

– A “crawl line” with personalized messages
– A calendar in daily or weekly view, with audio alerts
– Weather forecast
– A “To-Do” list
– A list of frequently-called phone numbers
– A list of medications by day of week and time of day
– Albums of family photos

The family can also make the Memo familiar and appealing by posting family photos and updates, plus reassuring messages that help to overcome distance from their loved ones. “Memo is your assistant that can be there when you can’t, to remind your loved one of important tasks,” said Griffin, who conceived of the idea while caring for her own aging mother.

Developed with the assistance of both clinical gerontologists and researchers, Memo is a solid solution for the problem of memory loss among the growing population of elders. Memo has been in test since January by real families experiencing the stress of caring for an elder with memory loss, and was enhanced with feedback from both elders and caregivers.

Memo operates on an Archos 101 ten-inch screen tablet, with the Android operating system and 1024 x 600 resolution. It requires an Internet connection in the users’ home, with a wireless router strongly recommended. The Memo program overrides existing software on the tablet so the elder cannot accidentally get lost in a maze of applications, menus, or out in cyberspace.

Memo is priced at $299 for the tablet plus $174 for a six-month subscription to the companion caregiver website ($300 for a 12-month subscription). It can be ordered by visiting memotouch.com. Memo comes ready to go with a few clicks, along with recommendations for how to successfully introduce it into the home. The company offers a generous return policy if the elder has not embraced the product within three months. The tablet can be returned if not damaged, or converted to the original Android tablet, and the website subscription will be refunded for the remaining months.

Memo is offered by MemoTouch LLC of East Lansing, Michigan, formed in 2010 with the vision of producing a single, simple device to help ease the stress and daily disruption caused by short-term memory loss of elders and their caregivers alike. Dr. Griffin and Ms. Beia were motivated by the long-term and deeply emotional personal experience in caring for those with diminished memory.
