Advertising on blogs

October 12th, 2006

The popularity of blogs, frequently updated Web sites comprising personal thoughts and Web links, has exploded. A January study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project concludes that 39 percent of 147 million American Internet users visit blogs.

Steve Rubel, a senior marketing strategist at Edelman and owner of the popular Micro Persuasion blog, writes that “there are an ever expanding array of ways to make money with your blog.”

Advertise. Google offers AdSense, to display relevant Google ads on your content pages and earn money. BlogAds place classified ads on various blogs. There are many others and new programs crop up each day.

Join a commission program. Major retail sites such as Amazon.com and Sephora.com want you to promote their products on your blog — and they’ll give you a cut if someone buys from them by following a link from your site. You can earn up to 8.5 percent in referral fees with Amazon.com’s program, while Sephora.com lets you earn 5 percent to 7 percent commission. If you’re posting about your favorite CD or a new perfume, link it to one of these sites and make some cash.

Sell your own products. Sites such as cafepress.com and lulu.com make it easy for you to create your own T-shirts, calendars, e-books and more. They provide everything you need to get going and even handle the product creation, credit-card processing, shipping and customer service.
