News Aggregator Topix.com Launches Free Classified Ads

June 6th, 2006

News aggregator Topix.net — a joint venture between Gannett, Knight Ridder and Tribune — has launched a Craigslist-like free classified advertising service.

Craig’s List, the international free classifieds giant has been taking profits away from the newspaper industry for years, but the move is somewhat curious in that the Topix ads will compete for revenue with the various papers owned by the three JV companies.

Topix recently reached an agreement with the Associated Press to license AP online content for its site.
