Job seekers favor newspaper classifieds
December 31st, 2005Despite the growing popularity of online classified ads, most job seekers continue to rely on the classified sections of print newspapers for the majority of their job searches. More than 75 percent of job seekers read listings in the print edition of their local newspapers, while 60 percent (including some of the print readers) go online, according to a survey conducted by research firm Taylor Nelson Sofres. Sixty percent report combining their print searches with online or other searches, while nearly 60 percent rely on other means entirely, such as friends, professional organizations, and agency placement. Slightly less than half of job seekers who report using only one search method say they use newspaper classifieds. This is double the percentage of those who report using only the Internet. But age and income play a role in determining the sources used by job seekers. More than 75 percent of those with incomes over $50,000 use the Internet, while about 70 percent use newspapers. In contrast, 80 percent of households with incomes under $25,000 use newspapers, while 50 percent report using the Internet.
